New England Home Clutter S.O.S.

April 1, 2019

Last week I went up to New England to help a client who needed help organizing her awesome library/office.  We had never met in person although had spent much time on the phone the week prior to my arrival.  She is a friend of a friend and I just knew that she was going to be a really fun client.

Working side by side with people always ends up being a unique experience with each and every individual.  Letting someone in to their inner sanction whether it be their closet, bureaus, pantry or desks is very personal.  I have a method to the way I go through and sort belongings but once in a while I have a client that wants to do it their own way.  Which brings me to this library/office job last week.

I had so many laughs with this lovely, well accomplished woman. I couldn’t stop laughing when she started pulling everything off the shelves, out of the desk and file drawers and would just dump it all on to the floor.  She got down with the mounds of books and paperwork because that’s the way she wanted to do it.  We had piles everywhere of garbage, recyclables and items to shred.   I would work on one side of the room rearranging the massive library of books, coordinating by color while she worked on the other side going through her personal papers on the ground.  Once we bagged it all up, we would then switch sides and do it all over again. Dump, plop down, toss and rearrange.  Dump, plop down, toss and rearrange.  Even her adorable little pup would come in and just sit in the midst of the mess while looking at us as if to say, “What the hell is going on in here?”.    It was hilarious, and I can’t wait to go back and work with her again.

I love working with woman. You start talking about life and can really get to know someone when it’s just the two of you working side by side. I love meeting interesting people and hearing about all of their accomplishments.  Everyone has a story.  Everyone has some chaos in their closets and on their bookshelves including myself.  I love my job and it feels good to help people put things in order.  It’s overwhelming to even start doing it by yourself and is much more manageable when you do it with someone else while listening to your favorite music.  Its cathartic, its cleansing and it gives us room to breathe.  The best part is when I receive a beautiful, grateful text the next day thanking me for how nice it all looks.  That’s my favorite part of all.  Another favorite part was finding MY book in her library. You just never know.
